Elvira Howard was born in South Carolina about 1830. In 1850 she was 22 and living in Lowndes County, Alabama, with Mary Howard, 45, also born in South Carolina. The census taker went from their door to the next and then to the house of William Goodwin, a planter of 68 born in North Carolina. Living there was Henry C. Goodwin, 24, born in Alabama.

On 29 January 1852 Elvira Howard married Henry C. Goodwin in Lowndes County. He is the H. C. Goodwin of the 1860 census and the 1867 voter rolls, and the Clabe Goodwin whom their son George's death certificate named as his father. By 1860 they were living in the Southern Division of Lowndes County. Elvira was 28, with three sons at home: T. L., 8, H. L., 6, and George Albert, born on 22 July 1859.

Two more children followed after the Civil War, Mathew about 1868 and Frances C. about 1871. In 1880 Elvira was 49 and living at Hopewell in Lowndes County. Her son George, 20 and single, was farming and was counted as the head of the house, with Mathew, 12, and Frances, 9, still at home. Her husband was not with them. Elvira, George A. and Thomas L. Goodwin were all members of Hopewell Methodist Church.

George moved on to Butler County, where he farmed for most of his life and married the widow Mollie Shanks Bush. When he died in 1937 his death certificate named his mother as Elvira Goodwin. Mathew, known as Matt, was living at Luverne in Crenshaw County that year. When Elvira died is not known.
