Emanuel Hamilton Gragg was born in June 1877 in Henry County, Missouri, probably at Montrose. His family gives 16 June, and his Social Security file gives 26 June. He was the youngest child of William Henry Gragg and Nancy Jane Cornett. In 1880 he was five, living at Montrose with his parents, his brother Samuel and his sister Jennie. Before 1900 he had dropped the first letter of his name. For the rest of his life he was Manuel, and some papers call him M. H. Gragg.

In the 1890s he went south with his father and his uncle Samuel into the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory, the coal country around McAlester. On 23 August 1896, at Krebs, he married Laura McAninch. She was fifteen.

In June 1900 Manuel was farming in Township 6 North, Ranges 15 and 16, outside McAlester. Laura was 19 and their daughter Sylvia was two. Laura's parents, Joseph and Hanna McAninch, lived with them, and so did an eighteen-year-old hand from Missouri named Frank Houston.

A son, LeRoy, was born on 31 December 1900. Manuel and Daymond followed, and in 1910 the family was in Haskell County with Sylvia, LeRoy, Manuel, Daymond and a baby, Lucy. Laura died between 1910 and about 1913. Manuel married again, to Virginia B., called Virgie, and their daughter Clara V. was born in 1914. By 1920 he had left farming and was working as a coal miner.

Late in life he went to the Pacific Northwest. He died at Seattle on 28 October 1960, aged 83. His death certificate named his parents as William H. Gragg and Jane Hornett, a hearing of Cornett. He is buried in Enumclaw Evergreen Memorial Park, at Enumclaw in King County, Washington. Virgie died in 1961.
