Emiliana Gonzales
Emiliana Gonzales was born on 23 November 1895 and was called Emily. She was born in New Mexico, according to the censuses of 1940 and 1950. Gonzales was her maiden name: her daughter Erma gave her mother's name as Emilina Gonzales on her Social Security application, and her husband gave hers as Emelina G. Sanchez on his draft card. Her parents are not yet known.
She married Estevan Sanchez, also written Esteban and called Steve, who was born at San Luis, Colorado, on 30 January 1907 and was eleven years younger than she was. Her eldest daughter, Maria Clorinda, was born on 20 May 1925. No record yet names Estevan as Clorinda's father, and she may have been the child of an earlier marriage.
The couple were living at San Luis in the early 1930s. San Luis is the old Hispanic town in Costilla County, in the San Luis Valley. Her son Maclovio was born there on 21 May 1931 and baptized at Most Precious Blood Parish on 2 June. Her daughter Erla followed about 1932 and her daughter Erma on 3 May 1934.
In 1940 the family was still at San Luis, in the same house as in 1935. The enumerator wrote her name as Emelina and her age as 34, well short of her real 44. At home were Clorinda, 14, Maclovio, 9, Erla, 8, Erminda, 6, Virginia, 5, Marie, 2, and a baby boy, Edrick. That October her husband, who was working for the WPA, named her on his draft card as the person who would always know where he was.
The family moved to Walsenburg, the seat of Huerfano County, where Maclovio grew up and graduated from St. Mary's High School. By 1950 they were at Pueblo, where Steve worked as a welder in the steel mill. Emily, now given as 53, had at home her daughters Frances Valdez, 20, Erla, 17, Erma, 15, Virginia, 14, and Mary, 12, and her youngest son Patrick, 3. Patrick was born when she was about 51, by the census ages, which do not agree with one another.
In 2004 her daughter Erma's family named Erma's living brother and sisters: Maclovio Sanchez of Denver, Clorinda Bruno of Colorado Springs, Erla Duarte of Pueblo West and Mary Edwards of Pueblo. A brother and a sister had already died.
Estevan died at Pueblo in October 1967. Emiliana lived on in Pueblo until March 1980, when she was 84. They are buried side by side in lot 437 of the Calvary section of Imperial Memorial Gardens in Pueblo, Colorado, under the words "Together Forever".
Her son Max became a permanent deacon of the Catholic Church in Denver in 1975, and her grandson Martin was ordained a deacon in 1989. Max had studied two years for the priesthood at the seminary at Antonito before the Army drafted him. Her daughter Clorinda, who married a Bruno, raised seven children and died at Colorado Springs in 2012 with great-great-grandchildren of her own.
