Emma Luona Shirley was born on 20 October 1866 at Stevenson, Jackson County, Alabama. Her parents were John Calvin Shirley, a Confederate veteran who farmed, taught school and kept a post office, and Martha Ann Foshee, who was born in Georgia. In 1870 the census taker found her, aged 3, at Pleasant Grove, beat 7, in Jackson County, with her parents and her baby sister Evaline. Her brothers and sisters included Evaline Louticia Shirley St Clair, Jackson A. Shirley and John Brazleton Shirley. Her father died in July 1881, when she was 14.

On 16 October 1882, a few days before her sixteenth birthday, she married Robert Alexander McGraw at Stevenson. J. Boyd Foster, a justice of the peace for Jackson County, performed the ceremony. They had eleven children, including Leonard P. McGraw, Albert Franklin McGraw, John Calvin McGraw, Minnie Mae McGraw, Floyd William McGraw, Jesse Shirley McGraw, Emma McGraw, Lloyd Castle McGraw, Ola McGraw and Robert Tate McGraw. Two of the sons, Albert and John Calvin, were born in Arkansas in the mid 1880s, so the young couple spent some years there. In 1900 the family was back in Jackson County, at Tupelo precinct, where Emma L. was 34 with nine children at home. Her son Jesse died as a child in 1905. In 1910 they were at Fackler.

Emma died on 17 September 1932 at South Pittsburg, Marion County, Tennessee, and was buried the next day at Hollywood, Jackson County, Alabama. One source names the burial ground as the Old Baptist Cemetery and another as Mud Creek Cemetery.
