Ensign Joseph Farwell
Joseph Farwell, born at Concord in Massachusetts on 26 February 1640/1, a son of Henry Farwell the immigrant and Olive Welby.
He married at Chelmsford on 25 December 1666, by Samuel Adams, Hannah Learned, daughter of Isaac Learned and Mary Stearns of that town. He held the rank of Ensign.
His father's will, made at Chelmsford on 12 July 1670, names him "my son Josiph farwall" and leaves him "all the Land that hee hath in presant posashion". In return he was to pay his mother ten shillings a year and his three sisters thirty pounds. The will also provides for his wife, "hannah farwall my Dauter my Son Josiphs wif". He and his mother were named executors.
He was a large landowner. Besides what he inherited from his father he bought other tracts, and held land in Chelmsford, Dunstable and Groton. He died on 31 December 1722 and is buried in the old Dunstable cemetery at South Nashua, under a stone reading HERE LYES YE BODY OF ENSIGN JOSEPH FARWELL, DEC'D DECEMBER YE 31, 1722, IN YE 82ND YEAR OF HIS AGE. His will was filed for probate on 16 January 1722 and his wife survived him.
