Ernest Gaylord Charter
Ernest Gaylord Charter was born on 17 June 1875 at Delhi, in Delaware County, Iowa. His parents were probably Albert Ernist Charter, a New Yorker born in 1838, and Martha Luella Hughes, born in 1848 at Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Everyone who knew him called him Kid.
He married Ora Ethel Beverly, a Texas rancher's daughter twelve years younger than he was. Their first son, Theodore Travis, was born in 1904. Over the next seventeen years they had at least six more children: Robert, called Bert; Tempest Isabelle in 1909; Viola Elizabeth in 1913; Earnest George in 1916; Mamie Alfreda in 1918; and Gayle Lloyd, the youngest, in 1921.
The family homesteaded in western Oklahoma. Federal land office tract books record Ernest G. Charter on Oklahoma land in July 1908 and again in March 1918. In 1920 the census found the household in Dewey County with six children. In 1928 his son Gale was enrolled in school at Camargo, a small town on the Canadian River in Dewey County, with E. G. Charter given as his father. By 1930 the family had moved to Irwin Township in Woodward County, the next county north.
Within ten years they had left Oklahoma for Wyoming. The 1940 census found Ernest and Ethel Charter at Rawlins, in Carbon County, with their son Gayle, then nineteen, still at home. Rawlins sits on the Union Pacific line in the high sagebrush country of south central Wyoming, and it was cattle and sheep country.
Ernest Charter died at Rawlins on 21 March 1959, at eighty three. He is buried in the Rawlins Cemetery. His flat granite stone reads: "KID" ERNEST G. CHARTER, JUNE 17, 1875, MAR. 21, 1959, and along the bottom, PIONEER WYOMING COWBOY. Ethel lived another seventeen years and was buried beside him.
