Evelyn Hileman
Evelyn M. Hileman was born in Washington, District of Columbia, on 30 October 1908. She was the daughter of Albert A. Hileman and his wife Beatrice, and she had a brother, Frank D. Hileman, and a sister, Zoe, who married a Getz. On 18 August 1927, at 18, she married Henry Hirrlinger, a young Washington electrician, at Niagara Falls, New York.
Their first child, Lorraine Evelyn, was born about 1929, and their son Jack was born in June 1933. The family lived at 2216 Quincy Street northeast, the frame house Henry had built in 1929. In 1940 Evelyn was 31, and in 1950, at 41, she was keeping house there.
Lorraine went to the University of Maryland and joined the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. By 1953 she had chaired the sorority's alumnae council for the Washington area. In December 1955 Henry and Evelyn announced her engagement to John F. Briggs of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
By then Henry and Evelyn had moved to Olney Acres, a new development in Montgomery County, Maryland. Evelyn took to it quickly. In March 1956 the neighbors organized a club to promote friendship and work for the good of the community and its children, and Evelyn was its first president. Its first project was making tray favors for the residents of the Sharon nursing home at Sandy Spring. In 1958 the club held a hobby night every month at her house.
She served on the planning committees of the county's homemakers' clubs and women's groups. In 1963 she chaired the ticket sales for a benefit performance of "The King and I" at the Shady Grove Music Fair, raised for the building fund of Montgomery General Hospital at Olney. The notices gave her telephone, WA 4-9575, for anyone who wanted seats.
Her mother, Beatrice Hileman, of Sandy Spring, near Olney, died on 15 June 1978. Evelyn died two years later almost to the day, on 18 June 1980, still living at Olney Acres. Her notice in the Evening Star the next day named her son Jack, her daughter Lorraine H. Briggs, her brother Frank D. Hileman and Joe Getz. She is buried beside Henry at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Prince George's County, Maryland.
