Ezra D. Terry was born in New Hampshire about 1834. He spent his short life in the upper Connecticut River valley of Grafton County, in the hill towns of Haverhill, Piermont and Warren.

His wife was Esther, born about 1837 in Canada East, the part of the Province of Canada that is now Quebec. On 18 November 1858 a daughter was born to them at Haverhill. In the summer of 1860 the census taker found them at Piermont: Ezra, 26, Esther, 23, a son Edward, 3, and a daughter Fidelia, 1.

In the autumn of 1862 Ezra joined the Union army. He is entered as enlisting at Piermont on 4 September 1862 and again at Concord, the state capital, on 8 October 1862. He served as a private in Company B of the 15th Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry. The 15th was a nine-month regiment, raised in the fall of 1862 and sent by sea to Louisiana. There it served in the campaign against Port Hudson, the Confederate fortress on the Mississippi that held out until July 1863. Fifteen men from Piermont went into Company B together, and Ezra, given as 28, was one of them. The regiment's history, written by its veterans in 1900, follows what became of them. In the assault on Port Hudson on 27 May 1863 the company's fourth sergeant, Thomas A. Barstow of Piermont, was killed, Hiram L. Clark of Piermont was badly wounded in the head, and Harrison Messer, eighteen, was wounded in the hand. Company B lost 24 men in its nine months, most of them to diphtheria and fever in the camps around New Orleans. The regiment as a whole lost 183. The regiment came home and was mustered out that August.

Back in Grafton County, the family settled at Warren. A son, Walter Joseph, was born there on 24 March 1864. Ezra Terry died at Warren in 1869, a married man, when Walter was five.

Walter later moved west to Kaukauna, Wisconsin, where his family remembered his parents as Ezra and Ester Terry. He named his first two sons Edward and Joseph and a later son Ezra.
