Frances L. Gilmore
Frances L. Gilmore was born on 6 June 1907 in New York. She came to California about 1921, when she was about fourteen, and by about 1923 she was living in San Bernardino, which stayed her home for the rest of her life. An aunt, Mrs. Bessie Nett, was living at Riverside when Frances died.
She married Shelby E. Bass, a young man from Mississippi who had come west. Their son Robert Arvil Bass was born in Los Angeles County on 30 May 1934, and a daughter, Linda Marie Bass, on 15 March 1940. The birth entries of both children give their mother's maiden name as Gilmore. A second daughter, Connie, came after. The family made its home at Highland and in San Bernardino, where Shelby owned and ran the 5th St. Top Shop, which made and repaired car tops and upholstery.
Robert made a career in the United States Air Force. Linda married a Clark and Connie a Porter.
Frances died on Wednesday, 28 January 1970, in a San Bernardino hospital, aged sixty two. She was then living at 5487 Elmwood Drive, San Bernardino. Her obituary in the San Bernardino Sun named her survivors as her husband, Shelby E.; a son, Robert, "of the U.S. Air Force"; two daughters, Mrs. Linda Clark of Indiana and Mrs. Connie Porter of Santa Monica; an aunt, Mrs. Bessie Nett of Riverside; and eight grandchildren. A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 31 January, and she was buried at Mountain View Cemetery. Shelby was buried beside her in 1979, and the two share one flat stone.
