Francis Marion Fennell was born on 15 November 1844 at McMinnville, in Warren County, Tennessee. His son Thomas named him on his Social Security application as Marion F. Fennell, the name he seems to have gone by.
He married Sarah Jane Eddy, born in neighboring Van Buren County, Tennessee. They had at least seven children between 1869 and 1884, among them Thomas Marion, born in 1878. Late in life the couple were living in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, near their son Thomas. Sarah Jane died at Rufe in 1916, and Francis Marion died at Valliant on 25 June 1924, aged 79. Both are buried in Moran Cemetery at Valliant.
He died at his home near Rufe on Wednesday 25 June 1924 and was buried in Moran Cemetery the next afternoon. Two days later the Valliant Tribune ran a short notice on its front page under the heading "Death of F. M. Fennell". It gave his age as 84, five years more than the birth year on his stone, and said only that he "is survived by several children."
