Francis Sprague
He came in the Anne, which reached Plymouth in July 1623 with his wife and a daughter, and into a colony that could not feed the people already in it. Bradford wrote of that summer's arrivals that the best dish they could set in front of them was a lobster, or a piece of fish, without bread or anything else but a cup of fair spring water.
He shared in the land division that autumn, and at the division of cattle in 1627 gave in the names of two children, Ann and Mary. He was taxed eighteen shillings at Plymouth in January 1632/3, settled about that time near the Nook in Duxbury, and was made a freeman on 17 June 1637. That same year he was licensed to sell strong liquor, and he kept the ordinary at Duxbury for the next thirty years.
The licence and the court records go together. He was up before the bench more than once and his daughter Mercy was admonished in 1662 for mixed dancing, left her husband, and was divorced by him in 1668. He was still an inn holder in 1666 with a good deal of property, and in 1669 his son John succeeded to the business, which is the whole of the evidence for when he died.
