Francis Tidwell

Francis Tidwell was born on 17 February 1803 in South Carolina. He married Elizabeth, born in Tennessee in 1806. A memorial gives her maiden name as Forbes.

They had at least ten children between about 1825 and 1846. Their son William Madison was born in 1829 at Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee. Two sons, Thomas Jefferson and James D., died in 1845, and a son Richard Greenberry died as a small child.

By 1850 the family lived in McNairy County, in the far southwest of Tennessee. The census that year lists Francis, forty five, born in South Carolina, with Elizabeth and six children: William, twenty, Lucinda, Lewis, Jonas, John and Milly. In 1860 they were still in McNairy County, in the 12th District, with William, thirty, still at home.

William later married Martha Rebecca Stinson and took his family west, to Arkansas and then Texas.

Francis died on 31 December 1867, aged sixty four years, ten months and fourteen days. He was buried at Morris Chapel Church Cemetery in Hardin County, just east of McNairy. Elizabeth died in 1875 and was buried near him.
