Françoise Fisseau

b. 1728
Born 1728
Father: Nicolas Fisseau
Children include Louis

Françoise Fisseau was born in 1728, very probably at New Orleans, a daughter of Nicolas Fisseau, a Parisian, and Marie Anne La Garenne, who came from Mastrick. Her older sister Anne Marie died that October at three, and a baby sister, Anne Nicolle, died in 1731 at six months. Only she and a younger sister, Marie Louise, grew up. Her father died while she was young. Her mother married again, to Pierre de Lorme, and while still a widow sold a third of the family lot and twenty five feet of it to a man named Fontaine.

By the age of about sixteen she was married to Jean Fayard, called La Lancette, a soldier of the marine troops, and had gone with him to Natchitoches, the colony's post on the Red River. Her first daughter, Marie Anne, was baptised there on 7 September 1744, and the priest entered the mother under her own mother's name, as Françoise LaGarrene. A second daughter, Marie Louise, followed in September 1746.

Back in New Orleans, in May 1748, her husband took her stepfather to the Superior Council to save what was left of her father's estate for her and her sister. De Lorme's account to the Council says what there had been: two adult slaves and a child, two thirds of a lot, and an old house of stakes set in the ground with no furniture in it. One of the slaves, hired out to a man named Chenier, had drowned in the Lake. On 1 June 1748 the Council ordered the goods sold and the house and lot sold by the court for the heirs.

Six more children were baptised at New Orleans between 1748 and 1763: Pierre, Jean, André, Louis, a second Pierre, and Félicité. Her son Louis was born on 29 January 1758 and received the ceremonies of baptism at New Orleans on 29 March. The priest wrote her name as Françoise Fissot. When Louis married at New Orleans in 1781 the Spanish priest wrote it as Francisca Bousseau, and called her son a native of Deer Island, off Biloxi. Louis lived out his life on that coast and died at Biloxi about 1830.
