Franz Heinrich Hercules
Franz Heinrich Hercules was baptized at St. Pankratius in Warstein, a walled hill town of the Duchy of Westphalia, on 23 May 1771. The baptism names him Frans Hen. Herletti, son of Ferdinand Herletti and Gertrud Frechman. His godparents were Franz Lutter and Maria Catharina Francke. His parents had married in the same church four months before, and the clerk had written his father down as a man ex India Orientali, from the East Indies. His mother came from Eversberg, a small town in the same hills.
He married Elisabeth Hense, and on 19 August 1800 she bore him a son at Warstein. The parish register of St. Pankratius records the baptism: Joes Casparus Wilhelmus, legitimate son of Franciscus Henricus and Elisabethae Hense. The clerk wrote the surname Hergeles, and a later hand corrected it above the line to Hercules. Within thirty years the parish had written the family Herletti, Hergeles, Hergelis and Hercules.
A Franz Hercules married Sybilla Pingel at Warstein in November 1804, with Franz Hesse and Joseph Stahlschmidt as witnesses. That entry gives no age and no parents, and does not call him a widower, so whether he was Franz Heinrich is not settled.
On 8 August 1826 a Franz Hercules of fifty-five, son of Ferdinand Hercules and Gertrud Frechmann, married the thirty-year-old Margretha Franke, and children of that marriage were baptized at Warstein in 1827, 1829 and 1831. His age and his parents fit the baptism of 1771 to the year, and no other Franz Heinrich Hercules was baptized at Warstein in those decades, so the widower of 1826 was Caspar's father. Ten weeks later Caspar married Theresia Hoppe in the same church, and by 1843 Caspar was in St. Louis. No known record gives Franz Heinrich's death.
