Gabriel Baldwin was born at Connecticut Farms, in Essex County, New Jersey, on 14 August 1740. The place is the town now called Union. His father Ezekiel Baldwin had settled there, and Gabriel grew up among Baldwins, Littells and Woods.

He was a blacksmith. A county history of 1899 adds that he also made steelyards. A steelyard was the common balance of the day: an iron beam hung from a hook, with the load on the short arm and a sliding weight on the long one. With it a farmer or storekeeper could weigh a sack of grain or a side of meat without a set of weights.

He married Rebecca Littell, a daughter of John Littell. Their children were born at Connecticut Farms through the 1760s and 1770s. Rebecca came in 1764 and Mary in 1765. Three sons followed in 1768, 1769 and 1771, and at least two of them died as infants. Then came Susannah in 1773, Nancy in 1775, Sally in 1777 and David in 1779. A son Samuel, married in 1794, was also his.

Some time after the Revolution he moved the family north and west into Morris County. The Passaic Valley family records of 1852 say he went to Longhill, north of the New Providence church. The 1899 history says he was the first of the Baldwin name to settle in that county. A deed of 1800 or 1801 in the Morris County books carries his name. His wife died on 30 October 1794, and he married again, to a widow, Hannah Foster.

Several of his children went west. His son Samuel took his family to Ohio, where the grandsons married near Dayton and near Hamilton, in Butler County. His daughter Sally married William Wright and, as the 1899 history puts it, "removed to the west." She and her husband went to Butler County, Ohio, in 1808, and on to the Michigan prairie twenty years later. Mary married Nehemiah Osborn and stayed at Long Hill. Susannah married Nathan Halsey of Parsippany. Nancy married Daniel S. Wood of New Providence. David married two Brant sisters, one after the other, and farmed in Chatham township.

He lived to a great age, eighty four by one account and eighty six by another. That puts his death in the middle of the 1820s.
