George Chase was born at Newbury on 17 February 1702, the second of the nine children of Joseph Chase and Abigail Thurston, and was twenty four when his father took the family inland to Littleton. He died at Shirley on the fourth or fifth of April 1784, aged eighty two.

He married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Dayton, who died about 1736 leaving one daughter, Frances, born at Littleton in October 1734. In 1737 he married Lucy Wood, daughter of Jeremiah Wood and Dorothy Bennett, born at Stow on 16 March 1715 and buried at Shirley on 14 March 1787. She was thirteen years younger than he was and outlived him by three years. Six more children were born at Littleton.

About 1760 he moved again, from Littleton to Shirley, and stayed there the rest of his life. He lived on the Centre road, in the house that was still being called the Adams house when the family genealogy was compiled in the 1920s.
