George Darling
George Darling was born on 14 June 1781. His gravestone gives his age at death as 84 years, 8 months and 28 days, which fixes the date. A family account says he was born on Nantucket, a son of John Darling and Sarah Hussey, and came to Smithtown as a young man.
His wife was Jane Darling, born in November 1782. She was a Darling by birth as well as by marriage. A family account makes her a daughter of Adam Darling and Ruth Jayne of Smithtown. The same account gives them a son William, born in 1804, who died in 1806, and a daughter Sarah, born about 1825. Their son Walter was born on 18 December 1808.
George farmed on the west side of the Nissequogue River, among a cluster of Darling farms. On 28 September 1850, when he was 69, he sold thirty five acres to "Walter Darling son of the said George Darling" for $900. The land was mortgaged for $700 to the trustees of the estate of William H. Helme, and Walter took over the debt. The parcel touched the land of James Darling on the north and William H. Darling on the south.
Jane died on 26 May 1864, aged 81. George died at Smithtown on 12 March 1866. They share one stone in Landing Cemetery. His name is cut at the top, and below it: "JANE DARLING, wife of GEORGE DARLING".
