George Gardiner

He was admitted an inhabitant of Aquidneck in 1638, on the island's terms, submitting himself to the government that is or shall be established. Fifty-eight acres stood recorded in his name by March 1640, and he was present at the General Court of election that same month. Newport made him a freeman in 1641, constable and senior sergeant in 1642, and ensign in 1644, and in 1662 he sat as one of its commissioners. He was an educated man who took an active part in the affairs of the place, and his name runs through the colony's records until his death about 1677. He married twice, and the two halves of his family went different ways. Herodias Long came first, and her sons carried the Gardiner name south into Kingstown and made it one of the largest families in Narragansett. Lydia Ballou came second, a generation later, and her youngest son Jeremiah stayed nearer Newport. The old story that the first Gardiner in Rhode Island was a Joseph, son of a Sir Thomas Gardiner, was written into a family Bible in 1790, more than a hundred years after this man died, and the dates it gives fit him rather than any Joseph.
