George Glenn Brown
George Glenn Brown was born 7 September 1926 at Wyatt, a small town in Mississippi County at the top of the Missouri bootheel. His parents were James Arthur Brown, a Kentucky-born farmer, and Birdie Fox, a Tywappity Township farmer's daughter, married at Charleston in 1907. George was one of their ten children. On 19 August 1929, three weeks before George's third birthday, his father died of peritonitis at the St. Mary's hospital across the river at Cairo, Illinois. In 1930 his widowed mother headed the household in Ohio Township with seven children at home, George aged three among them. By 1940 she had remarried and carried the name O'Neal, and George, thirteen, was still with her, alongside his brothers James, Charles and Eugene.
On 29 December 1947, aged 21, he took out a marriage license at the Mississippi County courthouse. On 2 January 1948 at East Prairie he married Ruth Marshall, a farmer's daughter of twenty. The couple moved to St. Louis, where George worked for the A.O. Smith Company until he retired in 1991. About 1995 they returned to the family farm at Charleston, where he was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He died 18 August 2002, aged 75, at his son's home in St. Louis, and was buried in the IOOF Cemetery at Charleston. He was survived by Ruth, his wife of 54 years, by their son Gary and daughters Sherry and LaDonna, by his brother David, and by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
