George Lyman Chase
George Lyman Chase was born on 23 September 1865 in Hardwick, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Lyman Chase and Lorinda Oakes. His parents had published their intention to marry on 27 April 1854; Lorinda came from New Salem. Hardwick's history of 1883 lists two sisters older than George: Lillian Adella, born 20 August 1858, who died on 24 March 1880 at twenty one, and Nellie Gray, born 14 August 1863.
Gilbertville, where his son Fred was born, is the mill village inside the town of Hardwick, on the Ware River.
On 15 January 1896, at Worcester, George married Delia Ann Pollard. She had been born in Barnet, Caledonia County, Vermont, in 1868. They had three sons who are known: George Mervin Chase, born in 1901; Lewis Nathan Chase, born in Hardwick on 17 September 1905; and Fred Osmore Chase, born at Gilbertville on 24 November 1907.
George died in Hardwick in 1921, at about fifty five. His son Lewis was fifteen. He is buried in Hardwick Cemetery under a low granite stone that reads CHASE, with "George L. 1865 1921" on one side and "Delia A. 1868 1933" on the other. Delia lived on for twelve years and was buried beside him.
