George Washington Ferrell
George Washington Ferrell was born in Chester County, South Carolina, on 10 December 1882. He was named for his father, George W. Ferrell. His mother was Elizabeth Dodds.
He married Kate Estelle Revels, a Chester County girl nine years younger than he was. Their children were Virgie, born about 1907, George Roland, born on Christmas Day 1910, Sam L., known as Sammie, about 1911, Margaret about 1915, Luther Leroy about 1920, Elizabeth about 1923, Carl about 1924 and Robert Lee about 1929.
In January 1920 Kate and four of the children were living in the town of Chester, and George was not listed with them.
By April 1940 George, 52, was farming on his own account and owned his house just outside Chester, in Chester Township, valued by the census taker at $2,000. Kate and five of the children were at home, with Luther's sixteen-year-old wife, Mary Elizabeth. Next door lived his son Roland, a house painter, with his wife Eva Mae.
Kate died in March 1955. George lived on as a widower on Pinckney Road, outside the city limits of Chester. When he died at the Chester County Hospital on 24 July 1960, aged 77, his son Roland gave his usual occupation as merchant in the grocery business. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery at Chester two days later, beside Kate.
