Gertrude Elizabeth Carter
Gertrude Elizabeth Carter was born on 31 December 1913 in Virginia. She went by Elizabeth: the 1950 census calls her that, her son's marriage certificate names her Elizabeth Gertrude Carter, and her gravestone reads Elizabeth Carter Waddell.
Her parents were Ashby Carter and Sarah L. Carter of Fauquier County, and she was one of their eight children. On Thursday 12 October 1939 she married Fred Albert Waddell, who was three years younger, at Berryville in Clarke County. Both were then living at Rectortown. Her father had died the year before. Their daughter Doris L. was born about 1941, and twin sons, Douglas and Donald LeRoy, followed on 3 June 1942 at Rectortown, Fauquier County.
In May 1950 the family lived in a house on a farm in Scott district, Fauquier County. Elizabeth was 36 and kept house while Fred repaired radios for a retail radio store. A niece, Marilyn Furr, aged 15, lived with them; three of Elizabeth's sisters married into the Furr family.
Elizabeth was widowed in December 1979. She died on 25 May 1981, aged 67, and was buried next to Fred at Sharon Cemetery, Middleburg, Loudoun County, Virginia.
Her mother, Sarah L. Carter, died at Middleburg on 3 March 1957, on her 78th birthday, and named "Mrs. Fred Waddell, Rectortown" among her eight children.
