Gertrudis Janssen
Gertrudis Janssen, written Gertruij in her marriage record, was born on 21 May 1801 at Maasbree, in Limburg. Her parents were Hendrik Janssen and Margaretha Claessen. Her father was an akkerman, a farmer, and her mother is described as an akkersvrouw, a woman who worked the fields.
Before she married she was a dienstmeid, a servant girl. On 8 May 1830, at 29, she married Gerard van Densen, a 27-year-old clog maker of Blerick, at Maasbree. They made their home at Blerick, on the Maas across from Venlo.
She had at least five children: Joanna, Laurens, Peter, Jacobus and Joannes. By the 1870s her son Jacobus had come back to Blerick with his wife, Wendelina, also called Angelina, Lankes, and their small children, and Gertrudis lived out her life in a house of three generations. Her grandson Laurens Matheus was born there in December 1878.
Gertrudis died at Blerick on 8 June 1882, aged 81. Her husband died five months later.
