Gideon G. Gibson
Gideon G. Gibson was born on 10 February 1848 in Louisiana. Cemetery records name his parents as Uriah R. Gibson (1821 to 1884) and Matilda Gibson (1818 to 1909). His brothers and sisters included Hesikiah, Harvey D., Hiram Hambrick, Sebe, Sarah Jane (later Sanders), John Housie and Mattie D. (later Franklin) Gibson.
He married Mary M. Gallaway, a girl from Illinois, about 1871. Their son John was born in 1872 and their daughter Annie Mae on 21 April 1875. In June 1880 the census taker found the family in Precinct 6 of Robertson County, Texas, on the Brazos below Falls County: G. G. Gibson, 28, born in Louisiana; Mary, 25, born in Illinois; John V., 8; Annie, 5; Luther, 2; and Ida, three months old. The enumerator's 28 is several years short of his birth in 1848.
Two more children followed: Albert David in 1884 and Emma in 1888. Mary died on 11 March 1890, at about 34, leaving Gideon with six children between two and eighteen. She was buried in Blevins Cemetery. Two of their daughters married into the Spurlock family: Annie Mae married Tom Spurlock, and Ida Lee also married a Spurlock.
Gideon G. Gibson outlived his wife by almost thirty-eight years. He died at Coleman, in Coleman County, Texas, on 30 December 1927, aged 79, and was buried in Blevins Cemetery, where Mary lay.
He was a churchman. When Mary died, her gravestone named her "wife of Elder G. G. Gibson," the title of a minister or elder in a congregation. A photograph of Gideon in later life shows a bearded man in a wide-brimmed hat and a dark coat, holding a cane.
