Gordon Bolton
Gordon Wilbur Bolton was born on 18 April 1928 at Renton, in King County, Washington. His father was Wilbur Zenas Bolton, a Yakima County ranch boy born at Wenas in 1902. His mother was Lillian Helen Smrz, born in 1904 at Eastman, Wisconsin, to a Bohemian family that had homesteaded in Montana and moved to Seattle in 1918. His parents had married in King County the year before he was born.
His sister Lois Theresa Bolton was born on 25 July 1929, fifteen months after him. In 1930 the family lived in Seattle, and his mother's younger sister Anna Smrz lived with them. They were in Seattle in 1935 and still in the same house in 1940, when Gordon was eleven.
On his eighteenth birthday, 18 April 1946, Gordon registered for the draft in Seattle. He was a student, and he named his father as the person who would always know where he was. In the 1950 census he was twenty-one and living in his parents' household in Seattle with his sister.
Through his father Gordon descended from two Oregon Trail families. His great-grandfather Thomas Kelly went overland from Kentucky in 1848, and his great-grandparents Daniel and Elizabeth Bolton crossed the plains to Oregon in the early 1850s. Through his mother he descended from Vaclav and Marie Smrz, who left southern Bohemia for Chicago in the late 1870s.
His father died in Seattle in 1976 and his mother in 1989. In his later years Gordon lived at Forest Grove, in Washington County, Oregon. He died on 31 March 2007, in Washington County, Oregon, a few days short of his seventy-ninth birthday. A family account gives the place as Hillsboro. His obituary appeared in The Oregonian on 24 April 2007 and gave his birthplace as Renton. He was cremated.
