Hannah Grant

Hannah Grant was baptized at Cottingham, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, on 16 October 1631, the daughter of Thomas Grant and Jane Haburne. Her parents had married in the same parish on 21 September 1624. The Cottingham register carries a run of Grant and Haburne baptisms, marriages and burials through those decades, and it is the record of the family before they left.

She married Edward Hazen at Rowley in March 1650, when she was eighteen and he was thirty five and six months a widower. She bore nine or ten children between 1650 and 1673.

Her marriage record does not give her maiden name, which was the Rowley town clerk's habit rather than an omission peculiar to her.

Edward Hazen was buried in July 1683 and administration on his estate was granted to her jointly with her eldest surviving son. Eight months later, on 17 March 1683/4, she married Lieutenant George Browne of Haverhill, later a captain, who had been baptized at St Edmund's in Salisbury, Wiltshire, in 1622. He died at Haverhill in October 1699 and left his large estate there to her son Richard Hazen, whom he had adopted in 1693 as his sole heir.

She died at Haverhill in February 1715/16, in her eighty fifth year, having outlived her first husband by thirty two years and her second by sixteen.
