Hannah Snow
Hannah Snow was born in 1815 at New Haven, in Oswego County, New York. She was a daughter of Ansel Snow, a Bridgewater, Massachusetts man who had bought a farm near what became the city of Oswego, and his wife Arbelia Wilmarth. Her brother Orrin's biography, printed in 1892, names her among his sisters as "the wife of Solomon Forbes." Her mother's own mother was a Bridgewater Snow, so Hannah had Bridgewater Snows on both sides of her family.
She grew up with six brothers and sisters: Permelia, Mercy Ann, Cordelia, Orson and Orrin, and later Orla. In February 1837 the family sold the New York farm and left for Michigan. They traveled by sleigh, four weeks on the road, and reached Kalamazoo on 16 March 1837. Her father had bought government land in Oshtemo and Kalamazoo townships the autumn before. The farm was raw ground with no buildings, and the first thing the family put up was a log house.
That same year she married Solomon Forbes, a New Hampshire man who had come into Kalamazoo County about 1837. Their daughter Abigail was born in Michigan in 1839 or 1840. A son, Carey, was born about 1841. She bore her last children in 1845.
She died on 23 November 1845, aged thirty. She is buried at Grand Prairie Cemetery near Kalamazoo, the same ground where her father was buried nineteen years later. Her grave is marked by a modern granite stone: "HANNAH WIFE OF SOLOMON FORBES DIED NOV. 23, 1815 30 YEARS." The year is a cutting error for 1845.
Solomon married twice more. Minerva, the woman in the household in later censuses, was Abigail's stepmother. Hannah's son Carey died a prisoner at Andersonville in 1864. Her daughter Abigail married Francis Marion Snow, of an unrelated Snow family from Ohio, and in 1866 followed Hannah's brothers and mother to Macon County, Missouri.
