Harry L. Evans was born in Philadelphia about 1855, the son of Thomas Reynolds Evans and Mary Jane Lawrence. He had an elder sister, Anne Maria, called Annie, and a younger sister, Catharine. His middle initial is usually read as Lamont, though Lawrence, his mother's maiden name, has also been suggested.

A memorial compiled by a Lawrence relative lists him over his working life as an actor, an opera singer, an engraver and a mechanic. When he died, the undertaker gave his occupation simply as mechanic.

In 1880 he was twenty four and still living at home with his parents and his sisters Annie and Kate.

On 12 March 1882, in Philadelphia, he married Annie E. Campbell, the daughter of Edward P. and Annie Campbell. He gave his age as twenty six. Their son Thomas Reynolds Evans, named for Harry's father, was born seven months later, on 7 October 1882. A second son, George Chapman Evans, was born and died in 1887.

Harry died suddenly on 14 December 1891 at 1812 Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia's Fifteenth Ward, the house of his parents. He was thirty six and married. Because the death was sudden, the coroner signed the return, and he gave the cause as apoplexy, the period word for a stroke or a sudden collapse of the brain. The family's notice in the Philadelphia Inquirer read:

"EVANS. Suddenly, on December 14, 1891, Harry L., son of Thomas R. and Mary Jane Evans, in the 36th year of his age. Friends invited to attend the funeral services, at his late residence, No. 1812 Fairmount avenue, on Thursday, 17th instant, at 2 o'clock. Interment private, Mount Vernon Cemetery."

He was buried in the family lot at Mount Vernon Cemetery on 17 December 1891. His parents put up a stone headed "Our Son". His father died in the same house, also suddenly and also of apoplexy, sixteen months later.

His widow Annie was left with their nine year old son. She died in 1904, and Thomas grew up to be an electrotyper in Philadelphia.
