Harvey Merrifield was born in Marion County about 1827, while it was still Virginia, and his own children's death returns say so.
The 1850 census has him at twenty three, with Phebe at twenty one, Sidney W. at two and Columbus Newton at some months old, and an Elijah Satterfields of eleven in the house. He is in Marion County again in 1860, in Magisterial District 5, and in the Paw Paw district in 1870.
He died on 2 September 1886 in the Paw Paw District. The appraisement of his goods was taken on 20 November 1886 at the late residence of the said Harvey Merrifield deceased, in the district of Paw Paw, and filed on 9 December. Phebe J. Merrifield is entered as administratrix, so she outlived him.
The inventory is a Paw Paw farm entire: a cook stove, a sewing machine, a churn, a brass kettle, a grindstone, a windmill, an apple mill, a two horse road wagon, a lot of wheat in the granary, three spring hogs, a spring calf, a roan cow and stands of bees. Two hundred and eighty eight dollars the lot.
The men who valued it were THOMAS SATTERFIELD and JEREMIAH FETTY. A Satterfield and a Fetty, standing in his house counting his chairs.
And ten years earlier he was selling land with the Satterfields. A deed of 13 July 1876 conveys twenty one acres to John Q. A. Meredith from C. F. and Sarepta Satterfield, Harvey and Phebe J. Merrifield, and Barsheba Satterfield widow of Benjamin Satterfield deceased, three acres of it out of Merrifield land and eighteen out of Satterfield, along a line formerly dividing the lands of said Satterfield and Merrifield. Neighbours, not co-heirs, but neighbours who had been boxed in together since at least 1850.
