Henry Kilham
Henry Kilham, written Kellam in his will, lived at Dennington, a village in east Suffolk. His birth and parents are not known. He married Alice Goodale at Dennington on 12 August, in 1582 by the register as Walter Watkins read it, in 1583 by the bishop's transcript. Their eldest daughter, Mary, was baptized there in August 1583. Robert followed on 24 June 1590 and Elizabeth on 8 January 1593, when the clerk called her father a husbandman, a small farmer. The baptisms of Austin and his sister Alice are not in the surviving transcripts. Mary married William Tompson at Dennington on 25 April 1609. Robert married Margaret Godbolde there in 1612. Elizabeth died unmarried and was buried on 11 February 1618.
In 1602 his mother-in-law, the widow Elizabeth Goodale, named "Henry Kilham and Alice his wife, my daughter" in her will, and a granddaughter Alice Kilham. In 1619 William Thomson the elder of Saxtead, a yeoman of the next parish, chose "Henry Kilham of Denyngton" as one of the executors of his will. The same will mentions tenements in Dennington that Thomson had bought from Robert Kilham and Richard Adams.
His wife Alice was buried at Dennington on 14 July 1624, "wife of Henry Kellam." Henry was buried there in May 1631, on the 21st by the bishop's transcript and the 27th by Watkins's reading of the register. He made his will by word of mouth before witnesses, a nuncupative will, and it was proved on 3 June. It shows a working man's house. His eldest daughter Mary got his desk. His married daughter Alice Cosbie got his feather bed and his chest with the linen in it. His son Austin got all his clothes. Of the grandchildren, Daniel got ten shillings "or else my biggest kettle," William Tomson his bible, Ezechiel Tomson his new chest and his flock bed, Alice a coffer and two pairs of sheets, and Henry "my cupboard table and my coopers' tools." His son Robert got the lease and was made executor.
Six years later his son Austin took his own family to New England, sailing from Great Yarmouth on the Mary Anne in 1637.
