Henry Rose

Henry Rose is named as the father of Jerusha Rose in Facts and Folks, a book on the families of Jefferson County, Illinois, published in 1978. It gives her as "Jerusha Rose, born 1794 in Georgia the daughter of Henry Rose". It says she married George R. Rightnowar on 25 June 1809 in Livingston County, Kentucky. It also says the couple "came from Hardin County to Jefferson County in the late 1820's." No earlier source is known to name the relationship.

Hardin County, Illinois, was cut from Pope County in 1839. It lies on the Ohio River, directly across from Livingston County, Kentucky, where Jerusha married. Before 1839 the same ground was Pope County, and Henry Rose is in Pope County's census returns of 1818 and 1820.

Illinois took a census in 1818, the year it became a state. In Pope County the enumerator wrote him down as "Henery Roas", household 180. Three men aged twenty-one or older lived under his roof, with seven other people, ten in all. George Lackey was two lines above him. Ezekel McCoy and Daniel Vinyard come a few pages further on in the same return.

The state counted again in 1820. The Pope County return that year has "Henry Rose" as household 171, with two men aged twenty-one or older and two other people, four in all. The federal census taken the same year spells him "Roas, Henery", as the 1818 return had done. A household of ten had become a household of four in two years. That probably means grown children marrying and setting up on their own, though the census names no one but him.

His son-in-law lived close by. The same 1820 return has "Geo. Rightnour" as household 56: one man over twenty-one and six others, most likely George, Jerusha and their children. Next door was Elbert Rose, with a household of eleven. Thomas Rose lived a few doors before, and Pleasant Rose and Sharon Rose a few doors after. They may have been Jerusha's brothers. No record says so.

In 1876 Hardin County printed a Centennial Record with a sketch of the county's history. Its account of Monroe precinct names him among the first people to settle there: "The early settlers in that portion of the county were mainly from Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia; among them were Daniel Vinyard, Henry Rose, Ezekiel McCoy and Myers Singleton." Vinyard and McCoy are his neighbours in the census returns of 1818 and 1820.

Jerusha was born in Georgia in 1794, by the 1978 account and by the 1850 census. If that is right, Henry Rose was probably in Georgia then. His own birth, his wife's name, and when and where he died are not known.
