Henry Ryding

d. 1752
Died 1752
Children include Jennet

Henry Ryding was a yeoman of Bretherton, a township of Croston parish in Lancashire. A yeoman was a farmer of some standing, often owning his land.

He married twice. On 26 August 1740 he married Anne Jackson, a widow of Bretherton, at Croston by banns. She lived less than eight months. "Anne Ryding, Wife of Henry Ryding," of Bretherton, was buried at Croston on 8 April 1741.

Four years later, on 22 September 1745, he married Margaret Harrison at Tarleton. The Tarleton register notes that they were "Married by Certificate From The Parish Church of Croston." The banns had been read at Croston, and the certificate allowed the wedding to take place in another church.

Three children were baptised at Croston, each with the father entered as a yeoman of Bretherton. Hugh came on 16 March 1745/6, Robert on 9 October 1748 and Jenet on 3 February 1750/1.

He was buried at Croston on 17 May 1752, entered as "Henry Ryding. Abode: Bretherton. Occupation: Yeoman." Jenet was fifteen months old, and Margaret was left with three children, the eldest six.

Bretherton had two men of the name in these years. The other was a husbandman, who married Jane Abbot at Penwortham in 1740 and baptised children until 1753. He was still alive in 1755, when he buried Jane. So the man buried in 1752 is the yeoman named at Jenet's baptism. His own baptism is open. A Henry, son of Henry Ryding and Catherine, was baptised in 1718/9, and that family had moved from Tarleton to Bretherton by 1726. Either Bretherton Henry could be that boy, though the Tarleton wedding leans toward the yeoman.
