Henry T. Travis was born on 8 May 1880 in Mississippi. The family names his parents as William James Travis and Lucinda DeLaughter, who were farming in Beat 5 of Amite County that summer.

On 27 May 1903 he married Malissa Wilson in Franklin County, Mississippi. She was Julia Malissa Wilson, born three months before him, and the censuses call her Melissa, Millisa or Julia. They farmed in Beat 4 of Franklin County, near Shucktown, for the rest of their lives.

They had nine children. Luna May came first, in 1904, and died in 1910 at six. Annie followed in 1906, Maggie in 1908, Cade Monroe in 1910, Alton in 1913, Omie in 1916, James William (Dick) in 1918, Estelle in 1920 and, last, Loyd in 1922. The census found the family in Beat 4 in 1910, 1920 and 1930.

Henry died on 2 April 1948, aged 67, and Julia three years later. They were buried at Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery near Shucktown under one stone, "Father, Henry T. Travis, May 8, 1880, Apr. 2, 1948" on one side and "Mother, Julie Travis, Feb. 12, 1880, Apr. 17, 1951" on the other, with the line "They are at rest in Heaven."
