Henry V. Rutledge
Henry V. Rutledge was born in December 1863 in Damascus Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. He was a son of Edward La Tourette Rutledge and Margaret Stryker. The census of 1870 lists him at six in Damascus Township. By 1880, at sixteen, he was already living away from home as a hired farmhand.
He married Mary Jane Abraham, called Jennie, on 27 October 1886, in Wayne County. A notice of the marriage in the county's records is dated 8 September 1886. She was a daughter of George Abraham, whose sawmills had given Abrahamsville its name.
They made their home at Galilee, in Damascus Township. Their first child, Herbert Edward, was born on 1 December 1888 and died on 24 March 1889, at three months. He is buried in the Galilee Methodist churchyard. Margaret, called Maggie, was born in June 1890 and Lena on 28 July 1892.
The census of 1900 found the family at Galilee: Henry, 37, Jennie, 34, Maggie, 10, and Lena, 8. Jennie told the enumerator she had borne three children and that two were living. Their son George was born at Galilee on 11 November 1902.
The family was still together in Damascus Township in 1910, with Margaret, 19, Lena, 17, and George, 7. In 1920 Henry and Mary Jane were still married, with only George, 17, left at home. The marriage ended in divorce after that.
In 1930 Henry was sixty-six, divorced, and boarding with the family of John A. Hall at Hancock, in Delaware County, New York, across the Delaware River from Wayne County. Mary Jane died in February 1932, and her death certificate records the divorce.
Their daughter Lena had married Edward Koberlein and lived for twenty-two years in the town of Cochecton, in Sullivan County, New York. She died near Tylertown on 30 May 1933, aged forty, after three years of illness. Her obituary names her survivors as her husband, eight children, her father and one brother. Henry was alive that spring. Where and when he died is not known.
