Hiram Reed

b. 1806 · Virginia
Born 1806, Virginia
Children include Amos

Hiram Reed was born in Virginia about 1806. When he married for the last time, in 1883, he gave his birthplace as Scott County, Virginia. He raised a large family on both sides of the Kentucky line, and he was the father of Amos Reed, the Confederate soldier of Freeling, whose Virginia death certificate of 1932 names him.

Hiram had married Lucy Reed in Montgomery County, Virginia, on 26 January 1828, when he was twenty one. The marriage bond, signed on 26 January 1828, names her as the daughter of Humphrey Reed of Montgomery County, and Humphrey signed it with Hiram. Hiram wrote his own name on it. A William E. Reed also signed and swore before the clerk that Hiram was above the age of twenty one; in 1830 a William E. Reed was heading a household in the same district. In 1830 Hiram was heading a household of his own in the Christiansburg district of Montgomery County. Their son Humphrey, named for her father, was born in Pike County about 1839, and when he married in Scott County in 1867 the register named his parents as Hiram Reed and Lucy Read. A daughter born in Russell County in 1854 was entered as the child of Hiram and Lucy Reed.

His first children, George, Johnathan and Hannah, were born in Virginia between about 1831 and 1834. By 1837 the family was in Kentucky. In 1850 the census taker in Pike County found Hirum Reed, 45, with Lucy Reed, 39, also a Virginian, and ten children: George 19, Johnathan 18, Hannah 16, Susannah 13, Humphrey 11, Amos 9, Miram 7, Lydia S. 5, Wallis 3 and Mahala 1, the last seven born in Kentucky. A death record of the daughter Miram later gave her birthplace as Pike County.

About 1852 the family went back to Virginia. In 1860 Hiram, 53, was farming in Scott County with Ruthe Reed, 49, and the children Susanah, Umphrey, Amos, Miram, Lydia, Willis and Mahaly, and three born since 1850: a son Hiram, about 7, Lucinda, 5, and Luemma, 2. Lucy of 1850 and Ruthe of 1860 are a woman of the same age; whether Ruthe is Lucy's name misread or a second wife, the census does not say. His son Amos went to war in the 64th Virginia, was taken prisoner at Cumberland Gap in 1863 and spent the rest of the war at Camp Douglas, Chicago.

He was still in Scott County in 1870, in Floyd district, and there in 1880 the census taker found him, 73, a widowed farmer, both his parents born in Virginia. His daughter Lucy, 22, and son Andrew, 17, were at home, with five small children of the next generation: Richard, Patrick, Nancy Jane, Mary Bell and Lucinda V., a baby of three months.

On 14 August 1883, at 77, Hiram married again in Scott County. His bride was Nancy Stone, 47, born in Scott County, the daughter of William and Nancy Stone. The date and place of his death are not known.
