Hoggi Agagipope
Hoggi Agagipope was born in Armenia and was the father of John Manugoff, born there on 19 February 1893. His name is known from one document: his son's certificate of marriage in Los Angeles County in 1956, where the clerk typed it as Hoggi Agagipope, born in Armenia. That spelling is an American ear's rendering of an Armenian name. Hoggi is probably a form of a given name such as Hovhannes or Hagop, but the certificate does not say.
His son came from Russian Armenia, as the son put it on a daughter's birth certificate in 1925. That was the part of the Armenian homeland ruled by the Russian Empire: the province of Erivan and the Kars region, which Russia took from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. In 1920 the son told the census that both his parents were born in Armenia and that Armenian was their mother tongue, and his own. That year he was twenty six and working as a furnace helper in a steel mill at Torrance, California. He had left for America in 1913, at about twenty. His census, draft and vital records in California name no village.
