Howell Hight Sr. was a planter on Harts Creek in Warren County, Georgia. His family came down from Virginia, where his son Howell was born about 1790 and his daughter Polly about 1783. He held 580 acres on Harts Creek, between the Brantleys, Griersons, Haynes and Ryans, and a lot in the seventh district of Wilkinson County that the state had granted him. He could not write his name. He signed every item of his will with his mark.

The will left his wife a life estate in the home place, ten of the people he held in slavery, the household and kitchen furniture, the plantation tools and half the stock. The rest of the estate went in eighths to his children and grandchildren, each share with a named enslaved person: Randal to his son Henry, Collin to Howell Junior, Moses to Wiley Gilbert, Sam to his daughter Sally Johnson, Maria to his daughter Polly Crenshaw and Louisa to his daughter Sukey Grierson. His son Julius got thirty dollars. Julius's ten children got the land Julius lived on, the Wilkinson County lot and a man named Aleck, to be kept together until the youngest came of age.

He died early in 1821. On 5 March 1821 the will was produced and read in the Warren County court of ordinary, and his widow Ann Hight was named in the order that sent commissioners to divide the estate.

His daughter Polly had married Benjamin Crenshaw. Thirty years later, at eighty, Benjamin was still on his own land in Warren County, and Howell Hight, sixty, was living in the house with him and Polly.
