Hugh Mawdesley
Hugh Mawdesley was baptised at St Michael and All Angels, Croston, on 11 October 1702, the son of Thomas Mawdesley of the township of Mawdesley. An elder brother, also Hugh, had been baptised there on 1 February 1700/1 and buried the next day. He had two other brothers, Thomas, baptised in 1695, and Richard, baptised in 1705.
Hugh Mawdesley, husbandman, of Heskin, married Mary Croston of Heskin at Eccleston on 16 November 1725, by banns, before Mr Hodgson the curate. A husbandman was a farmer who worked land he held, a rank below a yeoman. Heskin is the township next to Mawdesley. Mary had been baptised at Croston too, eighteen months before him, the daughter of James Croston of Mawdesley.
Their children were baptised at Croston with the abode Mawdesley: Lydia 1726, Thomas 1729, James 1731, a second James 1734, Richard on 26 December 1736 and William 1738/9. Lydia carried Mary's mother's name, James her father's and Thomas his own father's. Then, between 1739 and 1742, the household left Mawdesley for Leyland, where the youngest, another Hugh, was baptised at St Andrew's on 19 December 1742.
He was buried at Leyland on 21 June 1744, and the baby Hugh followed him on 5 June 1745.
