Ingeborg Helgesdatter

Thirty-two in the census of February 1801, the wife of Knud Poulsen in the landless household at Røed, with three children under seven in the room. Her patronymic gives her father's name, Helge, and that name is the reason this family can be recognised at all.

Helge was uncommon and it was regional. In Sande, where her son ended up, every Helge the parish register meets for a generation is a woman; the men who carried it in 1801 lived on the Buskerud side, around Drammen and up into the valleys behind it. She gave it to her second son, which is the ordinary Norwegian courtesy of naming a boy for his mother's father once the father's side has been served, and that boy carried it down the fjord into a parish that had never had a man of the name.

Her own name came back twice. Her son's first daughter, born at Aas in September 1819, was christened Inger Gurine, which puts her and the child's other grandmother into one name; and in 1832, by a second wife, he christened a daughter Ingebor outright. Beyond the census line and those two christenings nothing of her has been read.
