Iola Adkison
Iola Adkison was born on 18 October 1880 in Panola County, in the piney woods of East Texas near the Louisiana line. Cemetery records name her parents as John J. Adkison, an Alabama-born farmer who lived until 1924, and Sarah Lunsford, who died in 1913. Both are buried in County Line Cemetery in Panola County. Her brothers and sisters were William N., Mary Ida (later Crooms), Thomas Jefferson "Dugan," Berta Neta (later Lake) and Lee Jackson "Lee Jack" Adkison.
On 16 July 1902, in Panola County, she married James Marion Passmore, a man of 35 with two daughters from an earlier marriage. Iola was 21. Their son James Elmer was born at Carthage on 5 October 1903, Homer Eldridge in 1905, and Jim M. about 1913.
In 1910 the census taker wrote her name as Ida. She was 28, living in Justice Precinct 1 of Panola County with J. M., Elmer and Homer. In 1920 the family was in Shelby County, and her stepdaughter Mary Buckner and Mary's two little girls were living with them. The 1920 census gave both of her parents' birthplaces as Alabama.
Iola and Jim spent their last years in Cameron County, at the southern tip of Texas. The 1940 and 1950 censuses found them there. Jim died at Harlingen in December 1955. Iola Passmore, widowed, died in Cameron County on 28 May 1961, aged 80. She was buried beside him in Harlingen-Combes Memorial Cemetery.
