Isaac Ward
Isaac Ward married Martha Jane Young at Benton, in Franklin County, Illinois, on 24 December 1840, and the two of them raised at least eight children in that county through the 1840s and 1850s. The censuses of 1850 and 1860 hold the household: himself at thirty and then forty, his wife, and the children coming at two and three year intervals with Sarah the eldest.
In February 1860 Calvin M. Clark surveyed an addition to the town of Benton "for B. W. Martin and Isaac Ward". An addition is a tract laid out in town lots and joined to an existing town. This one "contains thirteen lots of different sizes."
He was sheriff of Franklin County from 1864 to 1866, between John Denning and M. D. Hodge. The sheriff was the county's chief law officer. He kept the jail and served the writs of the courts. Illinois elected its sheriffs for two-year terms, and his ran through the end of the Civil War.
Late in life the family moved west. By 1880 he was at Walnut in Butler County, Kansas. By July 1895 he and Martha were living at Shawnee, in Oklahoma Territory, and the Tecumseh Leader reported their visit to their son Ed, the deputy county treasurer at Tecumseh. He died in 1900, a long way from the Franklin County ground where his daughter Sarah is buried. Martha outlived him by eight years and died at Shawnee in 1908.
