Iver Torkelson Lund
Iver Torkelson Lund was born on 22 September 1852 at the Lund farm in Skiptvet in Ostfold, in the low country east of the Oslofjord. He was baptised there on 24 October, the son of Thorkel Iversen and Maren Andersdatter. In the Norwegian manner he was Iver Torkelsen, son of a Torkel, of Lund; in America the patronymic became a middle name and the farm became the surname. When he emigrated, on what ship, and when he was naturalised are not known.
He married Kirstine Melkeberg, recorded also as Inger Kirstine. She too was from Ostfold, out of Spydeberg, the next district over from his own. They raised six daughters in western Minnesota between 1886 and 1904: Julia Marie, Ida Kaspara, Alma Mathilda, Nora Christine, Selma Amanda and Esther Constance. Selma died in 1905, at ten. Her five sisters lived to 67, 93, 92, 96 and 94.
The daughters married into the Norwegian neighbourhood around them. Julia became a Thomton, Ida a Melbostad, Alma a Lofthus, Nora a Hoberg and Esther a Knudson. The Melbostads came from Hadeland and the Lofthuses from Hallingdal.
He died at Montevideo in Chippewa County on 31 July 1932, aged seventy-nine, and lies in Saint Petri Lutheran Cemetery in Lac qui Parle County, where his wife, his daughter Alma and Alma's husband and children were all buried after him.
