Jacob Harper
Jacob Harper was born in Georgia on 8 July 1820, the date cut on his gravestone. Family accounts give his full name as George Jacob Manning Harper. He lived in Coffee County, in south-central Georgia.
By family accounts he married twice. His first wife was Nancy Young, who died in 1851, and their sons Thomas and Jacob died as small children; a son Henry, born 1849, grew up. His second wife was Florida, about fifteen years younger than he was. By the same accounts their children came over nearly thirty years: Elam, born 1853, Mary, Needham, Leaston, John, Nancy, James, Elijah, Ellafair, Elisha, Laura Sarah, George, and Nathaniel, born 1881.
In the 1880 census he was fifty-eight and living in District 1026 of Coffee County with Florida, forty-five, and eight of the children, from Leaston, nineteen, down to George, four. A man of thirty named Jasper Nobles was also in the house. Florida died about two years later, aged forty-five. Jacob died on 28 October 1896, aged seventy-six, and was buried in Lax Cemetery in Coffee County. His stone gives his first name on a carved ribbon: "Jacob Harper, born July 8, 1820, died Oct. 28, 1896".
