Jacob Woodall Sr.
Jacob Woodall Sr. was a planter in Johnston County, North Carolina, on the White Oak Swamp and the waters of Hannah Creek. His birth is not recorded; a memorial gives 1770. At least two men named Jacob Woodall lived in the county, and in his will he called himself Jacob Woodall Sr.
He bought land steadily. Philemon Hodges of Cumberland County sold him a tract in 1805, the state granted him 562 acres on the White Oak Swamp in 1806, and he bought from Britain Ryals, Payton Ivey and Hartwell Ivey between 1812 and 1818. He settled land on his sons while he was alive. William received a gift deed in November 1814. On 11 May 1818 he gave 648 acres to "James Woodall his son," for love and good will "and for the better maintenance and support of him."
He made his will on 23 November 1848. He gave his son William two enslaved people, Sam and Spicey, and his daughter Cinderella two more, Joe and Neroy. His son James G. received Arthur and Silvey "togather with her increase." His daughter Charity had the use of a girl named Rachel for life, then her children. His wife Lucy had Silas and Book for her life, and after her death their price was to be divided in fourths among William, Cinderella, James G. and Charity's children. He also lent Lucy the household things: "two feather beds togather with their necessary furniture one chest, one table, boffat one set of cups & saucers, two earthen dishes and one pewter dish six pewter plates, one jug two glass bottles one case of knives and forks," a coffee pot, a spider skillet, a loom and a flax wheel. His grandson Seth Woodall was executor.
He died between the end of 1848 and about 1850. In February 1855 Charity's children, Mary, Nancy, Hugh, Hinton and Wilson Barber, petitioned the county court against Seth, who had proved the will "more than two years" before and had not yet paid them.
