Jacob Zimmerman was born on 8 February 1837 in Württemberg and was baptized the same year. His obituary gives the place as "Biscelsburg, Neuenburg". That reads best as Bieselsberg, a village in the Württemberg district of Neuenbürg in the northern Black Forest, today part of Schömberg; both his censuses say Württemberg. He was confirmed in 1851. In 1853, at sixteen, he left for America.

He landed at New York and worked in the city until 1858. Then he went west to Lincoln, in Logan County, Illinois. His first wife, by his obituary, was Elizabeth Luz, married in 1860; the state's marriage index has Jacob Zimmerman and Louise Lutz in Logan County on 11 August 1861. They had two children, Gottlieb and Christina. His wife died in 1863. His headstone at Seward is cut with his Civil War service, Company G of the 9th Illinois Infantry.

In January 1867 he married Anna Gutbrod, a young woman from Kusterdingen in Württemberg who had come to Lincoln the year before. The Logan County clerk wrote her Annie Gudbrot. The marriage index dates the wedding 10 January 1867; his obituary gives 1866, and the couple kept their golden wedding in 1916. They had eleven children, six daughters and five sons, and every one of them outlived him. The censuses find the family at Elkhart in Logan County in 1870 and in Chester Township in 1880. Their daughter Regena married John Ruppert of Nokomis in 1889.

In 1892 the family moved to York County, Nebraska, to a farm near Utica. In 1908 they left the farm for the town of Seward. Anna died there in May 1919. He lived the rest of his life with his eldest daughter, Christina, Mrs. Fred Gehlbach. He died at Seward on 10 September 1924, at eighty-seven, and is buried in the Seward Cemetery. He left thirteen living children, thirty-three grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.
