A farmer in Saint Albans Township, Hancock County, from at least 1870, and in Adams County for twenty years before that. He married twice. Lavina McCane, an Ohio woman, married him at Adams County in April 1852, and by the census of 1860 they had four children at Keene: Jane, the twins Josephus and Josephine, and John. Lavina walked out on him in March 1864, and in June 1867 the Adams County court granted him a divorce for desertion. The next year he married Mary Louisa Prentiss in the same county, a woman twenty-three years his junior who had also been married before. They had nine children between 1868 and 1887. Three of the boys died small, two of them on consecutive days in November 1881. Edward Chester was the eighth. He died on the first of February 1900 at Stillwell and is buried at Breneman Cemetery. Mary outlived him by thirty-five years and was brought back from Missouri to be buried beside him.
