James Henry Piggott was born on 18 March 1870 in Conecuh County, Alabama, a son of James Madison Piggott and Sarah D. Mims. In the census that summer he is James, aged 0, the youngest in his parents' house at Fork of Sepulga, with seven older brothers and sisters. His grandfather Thomas Piggott, family accounts say, had built the first grist mill in the Fork Sepulga settlement of Conecuh County.

In the early 1890s he married Mary Stephen Dean, born in 1875, the daughter of Stephen P. Dean and Frances Watts. Her father had died before she was six months old. If the family's links are right, Mary's grandmother Eliza Piggott Dean was James's own aunt, so he married the daughter of his first cousin.

They raised their family in Butler County, and ten children are known. Jimmie was born in 1894, David Crockett in 1896, Tom Morgan in 1897, Byron in 1899, Joseph in 1901, Emory in 1903, Flossie in 1905, Minnie Cato in 1907, Fannie Maude in 1909 and Jesse Willard, called Bill, in 1915. The death certificates of several of them name their parents as James H. Piggott and Mary Dean. Tom and Flossie both died in 1910, and Joe died in 1927 at twenty-six.

A photograph kept by the family shows James and Mary standing together outdoors in their working clothes, James in a broad hat and a white shirt, Mary in a long dark dress.

James Henry Piggott died at Garland, Butler County, on 10 August 1924, aged 54, when his youngest son was nine. His death certificate names his parents as James M. Piggott and Sarah Mimms. His mother-in-law, Fannie Watts Dean, had been buried in McClure Cemetery in Butler County in 1918, and James was buried there too. His stone reads "Father / J. H. Piggott / Mar. 18, 1870 / Aug. 10, 1924 / At rest." Mary outlived him by twenty-eight years.
