James Horace Brown
James Horace Brown was born in September 1860 in Meade County, Kentucky, the first child of John H. Brown and Matilda Caroline Greenwell, who had married in December 1859 and were boarding in the house of the Greenwell patriarch Benedict when the census taker came through in June. He grew up in the Concordia river precinct among six younger sisters, and went by Horace.
On 13 May 1882, by the account compiled in his wife's family, he married Julia Catherine Greenwell, daughter of the Payneville storekeeper Andrew J. Greenwell; the 1900 census's count of nineteen years married points a year earlier, and no county record of it is known. Land came to the couple through her family: her uncle Thomas S. Greenwell deeded a parcel to Julia in her own name in 1884. On 4 December 1891 Julia C. Brown and J. H. Brown sold their land to J. A. King, the same man who had bought her father's adjoining tract, and left Kentucky. By May 1893, when their son John T. was born, they were in Missouri, and the 1900 census found them farming the timber country of Little Prairie Township, Pemiscot County: James H. Brown, teamster, forty; Julia C., thirty eight; six living children of the eleven she had borne.
When his wife's father's estate was settled back in Meade County, the court appointed an attorney to represent Julia and her husband as non-resident defendants, cancelled the notes they owed the estate, and mailed her the balance of her share. The family moved on to Tywappity Township in Mississippi County, where their eldest son had married in 1907. James Horace Brown died there on 24 March 1919, aged fifty eight, of capillary bronchitis after a winter's illness, a doctor coming across the river from Cairo to attend him. His burial place is not recorded on the surviving copy of his certificate; his wife, who outlived him by twenty five years, lies at Calvary in Charleston.
