Born 1876, Marshall County, Alabama
Died 1964

James Jackson Dowdy was born on 27 May 1876, in Marshall County, Alabama, by a memorial to him. He came to the Troup country of East Texas as a young man and stayed there the rest of his life, about seventy years, farming.

He married Mary Evaline Stinecipher, called Evie, who was born in Cherokee County, Texas, in 1877. She had been married twice before and had three sons from those marriages, Francis Lee Sanford, Fred C. Hamby and Lee Hamby. James and Evie had five children of their own: George Dewey in 1902, Millie Ann in 1903, Claude Barron in 1907, Maudie Caroline, called Collie, in 1909, and Minnie Lou on 21 April 1916.

In 1920 the family was farming in Justice Precinct 5 of Cherokee County, near Troup, where the census listed J. J. and Ava Dowdy with George, Claud, Millie, Maudie and Minnie Lue. In 1930 Jim J. and Mary A. Dowdy were still in the same precinct with Minnie, then 13.

Evie died at Troup on 5 January 1954. James married again, and his second wife Mary survived him.

On the night of Tuesday, 11 August 1964, James walked out onto the street in front of his home in Troup and was struck by a car. The newspaper reported that he "apparently failed to see the automobile which struck him as he walked onto the street." It was driven by Mrs. Eula Cameron Soape, 54, also of Troup. State investigators said that when she saw him she braked, and the car "skidded 27 feet before striking him." He was killed.

His funeral was held at 10 a.m. that Thursday at the Union Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. O. G. Ledvord and the Rev. George Hamilton officiating, and he was buried in the Union Grove Cemetery. The Tyler paper called him "a retired farmer" who "had lived in the Troup area the past 70 years." He left his wife Mary; three daughters, Mrs. Ray Jennins of Loving and Mrs. Bill Kee and Mrs. Robert Kee of Troup; two sons, G. D. Dowdy of Troup and Claude Dowdy of Arp; a stepson, Lee C. Hamby of Jacksonville; a brother in Louisiana; four sisters in Mississippi, Oklahoma and California; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He shares a gray granite stone at Union Grove with Evie, headed DOWDY: "James J. 1876 - 1964" and "Mary E. 1877 - 1954".
