James Lindley
James Lindley was born on 16 April 1681 at Ballinaclash in County Wicklow, Ireland. He was a cutler, a maker of knives and edged tools. In 1705 he married Eleanor Parke of Ballyredmond at Kilconnor Meeting in County Carlow.
In 1713 he brought his wife and children to Pennsylvania with a certificate from Carlow Monthly Meeting. He bought 200 acres at New Garden and 400 at London Grove in Chester County. He was a leading settler of the New Garden meeting from its first year, and in 1723 he became the first constable of New Garden Township.
He fathered twelve children, and the New Garden meeting register enters every one. Thomas was the eldest, born in Ireland in 1706. Rachel, James and the twins Robert and Margery were also born in Ireland, the twins in June 1712. William, Alice, Mary, Jonathan, Elizabeth and Hannah were born in Pennsylvania between 1715 and 1723. The last, Eleanor, was born in March 1727, three months after her father died. James died on 13 December 1726. His inventory came to 1,115 pounds, and one account calls it the most considerable estate in the Pennsylvania Quaker records of its time. Eleanor later married Henry Jones.
